Leather & Lace

OK. They’re suede but Suede and Lace didn’t have as nice a ring to it. Close enough! We ventured into New York City for our anniversary on Saturday night. I was hoping to be able to take more pictures when we got there but traffic didn’t allow us to do that. By the time we got into the City we were just in time for our reservation and it was dark. Oh well. I wanted something pretty but not fussy. Have you noticed I’m not much of a dress girl? I got this amazing Free People lace tunic and wore it over my Rag & Bone suede pants. I love how the sleeves gently cascade over my hands. A plus to having short arms? How could I pass up an opportunity to wear the Louboutin? They go with everything!

Holiday Time

Office holiday parties require a certain amount of etiquette and panache. I actually bought this dress for another event and ended up wearing it to my husband’s holiday party as well. I love it when you get more than one use out of a dress. They cost a lot of money to just hang in a closet forever. Everyone agreed that this dress is just “so me”. Flowy. Of course. I searched and tried on, rinse and repeat. This gem was hunted down at BCBG and much to my surprise when I arrived at the register it was half off. Go me! It is an LBD but in this case the “B” stands for blue. It’s this fabulous steel shade and looks great paired with black tights and shoes and silver jewellery. It could also totally be worn in multiple seasons. In the summer skip the tights and pair with sky high, strappy sandals. Voila.

Fall For It

The second the temperature drops the tiniest little bit I get completely psyched for fall. I feel more like myself in dark colours and boots. I started out getting dressed this evening in much lighter coloured garb. I couldn’t do it. I kept looking in the mirror and wondering who was staring back at me. I’ve realized that you should stay true to who you are — doesn’t only apply to outfits. If you’re not comfortable in an outfit don’t wear it out. More importantly, don’t buy it. Only spend your money on pieces that call to you and make you feel awesome!

Weekend At The Waldorf – Night 1

This past weekend I attended Vision Expo East in New York. It’s a huge trade show for everyone in the vision field. I go each year to check out all the new fabulous frames.  I literally had not left the state since last August when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was my first weekend out of New Jersey in a very long time — and I only live 45 minutes from New York City! As a special treat we stayed at the Waldorf Astoria. The art deco decor is unbelievable. Even the elevator doors are beautiful. We felt so fancy! There was actually a little note in the reservation confirmation asking us to respect the formal dress code in public areas after six o’clock in the evening. Of course not everyone was in formal attire, but there were many people dressed up for some very special events in amazing ball gowns.

The first night of our stay we were invited to attend a dinner with Smoke and Mirrors, the company who provided me with the sunglasses from my previous post. The event was held at Tao Downtown which is a high end Asian restaurant and club with a very cool subterranean, multi level design. It’s funky and loud and bustling so my outfit reflected the vibe with just a little bit of fanciness — my first pair of red bottoms. We were super pressed for time. New York City traffic was not kind to us, nor was the weather, so I don’t have as many pictures as I would like and it’s difficult to tell that my vest is actually navy on an otherwise all black ensemble. I may have to wear this again! In any case, enjoy. Oh, and yes, Lubi got to stay at the Waldorf too!

Flowers for the Snow

There’s just something ironic about wearing a nice floral top and floral jewellery during a snow storm. Why not? This winter has been crazy so you have to have fun with it. Being that I was scheduled to have more surgery to remedy this whole breast cancer thing that I’ve been dealing with I decided that I would like to go out for a somewhat special supper before I was stuck in my house for a while. It’s especially difficult to pick footwear when you know you’re going to have to walk through some kind of slop even if there is valet parking. I love these platform booties but they are quite old so I just went with it. And wait until you hear about this fabulous jeans score. I found J Brand coated skinnies in my size, on clearance at Marshall’s for $25.00! Awesome!

Happy Birthday To Me!

Happy Birthday To Me!

Yesterday I celebrated my birthday. This hasn’t been a fabulous year for me having been diagnosed with breast cancer and having been through all of the things that go along with it. This year my birthday wasn’t about a number. It was about celebrating life with my amazing family. I had my hair done earlier in the day at Sparks to pamper myself a little bit and in the evening we had supper at my mum and dad’s with my family and my husband’s family. Since dinner was at the house it wasn’t fancy, but I wanted to wear something kind of special for my day. I had been waiting for the right evening to wear this amazing ASTR cardigan from Nordstrom Savvy. I love that it’s black and blue — one of my favourite colour combinations — and the fringes are so much fun! I paired it with a simple black silk tee underneath and these amazing J Brand jeans with little holes up the back. While I wanted some height, I didn’t feel it necessary to prance around the house in stilettos so I chose these simple booties with a chunkier heel. They are comfortable and didn’t distract from the rest of the details in the outfit.

Not a Vampire

Not a Vampire

So I just realized that it’s OK to take pictures of your daytime outfits. I’m not sure why I always felt like only my work or nighttime outfits were “blog worthy”. Even us bloggers have casual days. We’re not an elite group of men and women who look fabulous 24/7, dressed to the nines with full makeup and jewellery. Casual, however, doesn’t mean sloppy. One should always look put together. Even if you leave your house in sweats (the horror) they should at least match and be free of rips! Look like you have self respect and people will respect you.

This was my shopping outfit for the day. It literally happens only twice a year, but it’s worth the wait! The Nordstrom Half Yearly sale. My sister-in-law and I got up early and found some great stuff! Although not from this trip, my top is from the Savvy Department. It’s so much fun. Trendy, well made clothes and nothing is too expensive!
